General
What black is, physically
Black is what the eye perceives when a surface returns almost no visible light to it. It is not a colour of the spectrum, it is the absence of reflected radiation. A black pigment adds nothing, it subtracts. Which is why it behaves like no other colour, neither in paint nor on screen.
No physical black is perfect. A good black paint still returns a few per cent of the light falling on it. Vantablack, developed by Surrey NanoSystems, goes down to 0.035% according to its maker: its vertically aligned carbon nanotubes trap the photon, which bounces between the tubes until it dissipates as heat instead of escaping. On an object coated with this material, relief disappears and the shape reads as a flat cut-out.
Matte black and gloss black
Two surfaces sharing the same colour value do not produce the same perceived colour. Gloss black produces a specular reflection: it picks up its surroundings, shows the light, and reveals the smallest speck of dust and the faintest scratch. Matte black diffuses: it absorbs, flattens relief and gives an impression of density. On a product, that choice matters more than the shade itself.

History
How black became a colour of power
Among the Egyptians, black carried nothing funereal. They called their country kemet, the black land, after the silt the Nile deposits once the flood recedes and which makes the harvest possible. Black there stood for fertility and for the cycle beginning again. As early as 3000 BCE they were making an ink from carbon soot and gum arabic, on a principle that has not changed since.
The dyeing revolution
Throughout the early Middle Ages, black remained a poor colour. Dyers could not produce a deep, stable black: they got dirty greys, browns, shades that faded at the first wash. Black was then the colour of those who could not afford colour.
Everything shifts from the fourteenth century onward. Techniques improve, wealthy merchants adopt black as a mark of probity, and their demand funds the steady refinement of the processes. Princes follow: Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, makes it the visual language of his court after 1419. A century later, the Spanish court turns it into protocol.
The arrival of logwood from Central America, shortly after the first Spanish expeditions, finally gives European dyers a dense and lasting black. Black stops being a fallback and becomes a luxury.
From mourning to the little black dress
Mourning black, for its part, is codified in early modern Europe and reaches its height in the nineteenth century. It is that association Coco Chanel overturns in 1926, when the American edition of Vogue publishes her straight black dress and presents it as the Ford Model T of fashion: a simple object, without ornament, within everyone's reach. The colour of mourning becomes a uniform of elegance, and has remained one.

Culture
Black does not say the same thing everywhere
The Western reading of black, mourning then authority then elegance, is neither universal nor ancient. It was built between the Middle Ages and the nineteenth century, and it does not export as it stands.
- Ancient Egypt: fertility and rebirth, through the silt of the Nile.
- Japan: refinement and restraint. Black there is the finished form of an aesthetic that refuses display.
- West Africa: several traditions associate it with maturity, wisdom and the ancestors.
- The West: mourning, power, rigour, and for the past century elegance.
For a brand addressing several markets, this variation is not a piece of general knowledge. An all-black identity does not carry the same message in Tokyo, in Lagos and in Paris.

Decoration
Black in a space
What erases in clothing asserts itself in a space. A black piece of furniture, in a matte finish above all, looks bulkier than it is and draws the attention of the room.
Black darkens a room, which rules it out everywhere except where darkness is useful, a screening room for instance. Used in touches, it does the opposite: it becomes a setting. A black wall behind a pale shelf, a black frame around an opening, black joinery against a white wall, all work because black does not look at itself. It underlines what surrounds it.

Brand identity
Why so many brands choose black
Black is the default choice of two opposite families, and for opposite reasons.
In luxury and fashion, it extends five centuries of history: black there means mastery, rarity, the refusal of ornament. It has nothing to prove, so it shows nothing. Chanel, Prada and Saint Laurent did not have to invent that code, they inherited it.
In technology and product design, it means the opposite: neutrality. A black brand takes no position on a sector, does not date, clashes with no partner's colour, and leaves all the room to the product it frames. Which is why it is also the safest choice, and the most ordinary.
The three traps
- Sameness: in a sector where half the competitors are in black, black no longer distinguishes anything. The typography, the layout or the material then has to carry the difference alone.
- Printing cost: a solid black package demands a rich black, a suitable paper and often a lamination. It shows every crease and every scuff.
- Accessibility: a black identity pushes you to build the whole interface on a dark ground, which moves the contrast problem onto the accent colours, rarely legible as they are against dark.
Fashion
Black in clothing
Black remains the greatest common denominator of clothing, because it solves several problems at once. It goes with everything, it structures the silhouette, it does not date, and it spares you the choice.
Paired with red, it suggests desire, and advertising makes full use of that. Worn head to toe, it allows you either to disappear or to assert yourself, depending on the cut and the material. It is the uniform of the artist, the stagehand and the creative director, for the same reason: it puts the person second, behind what they do.
Color theory
Chromatic harmonies.
The color wheel organizes colors by their spectral relationship. These four combinations make it possible to build coherent, perceptually balanced palettes around noir.
Contraste absolu
Luxe intemporel
Tech premium
Noir + argent : l'esthétique Apple, Tesla, Bang & Olufsen.
Art & culture
The color in art history.
From Van Gogh's sunflowers to pop-culture submarines, noir has crossed every major artistic period with renewed energy and symbolism.
Black Square
Kazimir Malevitch
Black Paintings (Pinturas Negras)
Technique
Printing and composing a real black
On screen, absolute black is RGB 0, 0, 0, that is #000000: the three channels switched off. In print the question is more delicate, because a process black made of the black ink alone gives a dull, slightly grey flat tint.
Black alone or rich black
- Text: always 100% black alone. In offset, a registration shift between the four inks would blur text set in process colour.
- Flat tints and backgrounds: a rich black, around C 30, M 30, Y 30, K 100, gives the density that black alone cannot reach.
- Ink limit: never stack 100% of all four inks. The total coverage would exceed 300%, the paper would not dry and the print would set off.
Pigments are not interchangeable
Two blacks dominate painting, and they do not do the same work. Ivory black (PBk 9), which has long contained no ivory and is obtained by charring bone, is semi-transparent and leans slightly brown: it is the black of glazes and shadows. Mars black (PBk 11), a synthetic iron oxide, is opaque, neutral and highly covering: it is the black of flat tints and mixed greys.
Legibility
Absolute black is rarely the right choice in an interface
Pure black text on pure white reaches a contrast ratio of 21:1. That is the theoretical maximum, and the highest level the WCAG criteria can measure. One might conclude it is the optimum. It is not.
This extreme contrast produces a halo around the letters, known as halation. The characters seem to vibrate, and a trail persists while scrolling. The effect is markedly stronger for people with astigmatism, a substantial share of the population. On a dark background, pure white on pure black is the worst case.
In practice, a legible dark interface is built on a softened black, between #121212 and #1E1E1E, and on an off-white rather than a pure white. The WCAG thresholds stay the same in both directions: 4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text. Pure black keeps its place on short headings, logotypes and surfaces carrying little text.
That is the choice made on this site, whose dark ground is a heavily desaturated purple, #1B0B16, and not a black. A black tinted slightly towards the brand colour reads as a decision; a pure black reads as a default setting.
Science & nature
The color in nature.
Long before inks and screens, noir established itself across the plant, animal, and atmospheric kingdoms. Physics and biology explain the precise mechanisms.
Corps noir absolu

The Weber-Fechner law
Formulated in 1860, this law establishes that the perception of a sensation is proportional to the logarithm of the stimulus intensity. Applied to colors: we perceive brightness differences better in dark tones than in light ones, which explains why subtle variations are harder to distinguish in the lightest shades.
Luminance spectrum · shades of noir
≈ 0.008
Luminance relative

The ratio formula
The ratio is calculated as: (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05), where L1 is the relative luminance of the lighter color and L2 that of the darker one. Relative luminance is computed from linearized RGB components.
// Luminance relative du noir design #1C1C1C
R = 0.012 · 0.2126 = 0.0025
G = 0.012 · 0.7152 = 0.0086
B = 0.012 · 0.0722 = 0.0009
L ≈ 0.0025 + 0.0086 + 0.0009 = 0.012

Frequently asked questions
You may be wondering.
- Noir absolu : HEX #000000, RGB (0, 0, 0), CMYK 66/66/66/100.
- Chanel, Apple, Nike, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Rolex, Spotify (dark mode), The New York Times, Mercedes-Benz et Bottega Veneta.
